Mountain Sabinyo Volcano, Hiking Safaris in Uganda

Mountain Sabinyo Volcano is an extinct Volcano located in the eastern Part of the Virunga Mountains with its name Sainyo referring to Iryinyo locally and Tooth in English. The range is the oldest situated North East of Lake Kivu one of Africa’s greates lakes and West of Lake Bunyonyi in Uganda.

It’s highest summit is at 3,669 metres (12,037 ft) intersecting three different borders i.e Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It also spans across Virunga National Park in the DR Congo, Mgahinga National Park in Uganda and Volcanoes National Park Rwanda.

Mount Sabyinyo Volcano Hike

Mountain Sabinyo Volcano Hike is done in Uganda where they have made a safe although challenging trail where travellers hike using both their hands to climb. The Mountain is a one Day Hike and the trek takes about 8 hours i.e 4 hours to the summit and 4 hours descending depending on the physical fitness of the group as well as weather condition.

Hiking the Mountain Volcano starts at the Park office after meeting and being briefed by a ranger guide. You are provided with walking sticks to help you during your hike. Transfer through different vegetation zones ranging from Bamboo zone between 2400-2800m inhabiting the Golden Monkeys, Buffaloes, Elephants, etc. Between 2800 – 3200m is a stunning Forest patch of Hagenia Hypericum while over 3200 is the sub alpine zone with less trees. Here you can view the Rwenzozri turaco which is endemic to the Albertine Rift Region.

When you reach the Summit, you will be standing at the meeting point of all the three countries i.e Uganda, Rwanda and the DR Congo.
